Patient Prism's Dental Industry Blog

Here you'll find hundreds of articles and video interviews with dental industry experts on the topics of DSO and practice growth, dental software, call-tracking technology, patient experience and artificial intelligence fueling the dental industries ability to treat more patients and change lives.

Patient Prism is among the world’s leading artificial intelligence solutions in dentistry. Pearl is another.

In this blog, we take a look at the solutions Pearl offers for dentists and their teams in dental practices and groups of all sizes. We also look at Pearl's AI solutions for dental insurance providers that protect insurers from fraudulent claims and streamline claims workflow for faster claim processing.

Pearl’s AI Solutions for Clinical Dentistry

pearl logoPearl’s suite of dental AI solutions includes two for clinical dentistry, Second Opinion and Practice Intelligence. According to Pearl’s Vice President of Partnerships, Mike Buckner, “Every revolution in dentistry starts at the point of care. AI is the next revolution, and Second Opinion and Practice Intelligence are poised to be powerful catalysts.”

Pearl's AI Solution - Second Opinion®Second Opinion®

Second Opinion is a computer vision aid for real-time x-ray evaluation that is currently available to dentists across the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and several other territories. In March of 2022, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared this pathology detection solution to help dentists accurately identify a broad range of common dental conditions in patient x-rays.

Screen Shot 2022-03-23 at 2.00.41 PM"This clearance is a major milestone not only for our team and for the many dentists, advisors and partners who have contributed to Second Opinion’s development, but also for dentistry itself," said Ophir Tanz, CEO and founder of Pearl.

"AI is a paradigm-shifting technology that will add value across the entire healthcare continuum. Because x-rays are a regular part of every dental patient’s experience, the first place most people will encounter the power of medical AI technology will be in their dentist’s chair. Second Opinion®’s FDA clearance has made that possible."

Dentists and patients benefit from the dentist’s ability to spot and consider every condition that appears on radiographs in real time. Second Opinion has the ability to detect the signs of most dental pathologies and other treatable conditions commonly found on dental radiographs, including issues that are difficult to see like incipient caries or the early signs of periodical radiolucency.

Pearl's AI radiologic detection system is trained to detect the following conditions:

  • Bone Loss
  • Calculus
  • Crowns
  • Fillings
  • Notable Margins
  • Root Canals
  • Bridges
  • Caries
  • Edentulous Regions
  • Implant
  • Periapical Radiolucency
  • Widened Periodontal Ligament

Pearl's AI Solution - Practice Intelligence®

Practice Intelligence®

Practice Intelligence is a clinical management platform which merges AI x-ray analysis and patient treatment data. When the AI assesses the radiologic data of a patient and detects a potential condition or combination of conditions that may require treatment, it flags the patient and condition(s) as a potential treatment opportunity. Practice Intelligence also checks the PMS to see if the patient has treatment planned, scheduled, or completed for the flagged condition(s).

This product is seeing rapid adoption in the United States as well as overseas, and it predicts the following treatment opportunity types:

  • Perio
  • Endo
  • Scaling
  • Impaction
  • Implant
  • Restoration
  • Restoration Replacement

In DEO Magazine’s November/December 2021 issue, Pearl’s CEO, Ophir Tanz, reported that Pearl’s AI will typically surface up a minimum of one million dollars in historically undiagnosed and untreated opportunities on day one of a new client’s usage. “Pearl can look at entire patient populations to develop treatment funnels,” said Tanz. “Dentists can navigate through these funnels and see the patients in each group, looking at their radiographic evidence to get a better idea of what the patient needs.”

In a recent press release, Mike Buckner, Pearl’s Senior Vice President of Partnerships, said, “Over the last 10 years working in dental technology, I’ve encountered numerous solutions that promise to increase operational efficiency and overall production for dental practices. Pearl’s AI utilities do more than deliver on that promise: They enable practices to evaluate and augment their standard of care, ensuring that every patient need is met and that every practice’s potential is maximized.”

“What you have in dentistry is this massive consistency and accuracy issue. More than anything else, what AI is going to do is help to level up the standard of care across dentistry.” –Ophir Tanz, CEO of Pearl

Pearl’s AI Solutions for Insurance Claims

Pearl has developed two utilities for the evaluation of every radiograph-supported claim. With these solutions, insurance carriers can instantly approve all claims validated by the AI, speeding up the workflow of insurance providers, thus speeding up claims review and processing.

Claims Review®

By comparing diagnostic codes against detections from Pearl’s radiologic AI, the Claims Review solution ensures that no invalid claim is missed while allowing claims examiners to focus on the claims that actually warrant the review of a human expert.

Pearl Protect®

Pearl Protect helps dental insurers overcome losses with a patented AI solution that automatically identifies doctored and duplicative radiographic claims evidence. This fraudulent evidence costs payers billions annually. Pearl Protect’s AI can assess every claim historically and in real time.

What Is AI?

Artificial intelligence is a field of computer programming, also known as machine learning (ML). This field focuses on developing intelligent computer systems that learn and comprehend. AI computer systems can reason and problem solve.

An intelligent computer program is called a “bot” which is short for “robot.” As bots process incoming information, they recognize patterns, and can make decisions with little or no human interface. As bots process information, they become smarter and faster in their decision making.

This learning is enabled by software that mimics the functioning of the human brain in processing information. Deep learning (DL) software applications enable machines (computers) to learn without human supervision as they recognize speech, translate languages, detect objects, interpret computer-vision images, and make data-driven decisions.

To make assessments, the bot relies on statistical techniques such as regression analysis. Each mathematical function (generative algorithm) in the software is like a human brain’s neuron that takes action based on input. Based on correlations the bot has identified in massive amounts of historical data and predictive analytics, the bot can forecast the predictability of certain outcomes.
